This newsgroup, comp.std.c, is primarily intended for precise
discussions about the interpretation and future direction of the
ANSI/ISO C Standard, ISO 9899. If you're looking for discussions
about everyday C programming, you'll probably be more interested
in the newsgroup comp.lang.c, and if you have a *question* about
everyday C programming, you'll want to check comp.lang.c's
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) list first. (Actually, that FAQ
list has a section on ANSI/ISO Standard C, including several
questions which might be asked here, such as how to obtain copies
of the Standard.)
The comp.lang.c FAQ list is posted on the first of each month to
the newsgroups comp.lang.c, comp.answers, and news.answers (the
latter two are net-wide FAQ list repositories). An abridged
version is posted both on the first and the fifteenth of each
month. In most cases, you should be able to retrieve the lists
directly from one of these newsgroups.
Both versions of the FAQ list are archived at, and available for
anonymous ftp from, at least the following two sites:
site directories
rtfm.mit.edu pub/usenet/comp.lang.c
pub/usenet/news.answers/C-faq
ftp.uu.net usenet/news.answers/C-faq
(URL's for the above references are
ftp://rtfm.mit.edu/pub/usenet/comp.lang.c/C-FAQ-list
ftp://rtfm.mit.edu/pub/usenet/comp.lang.c/C-FAQ-list.abridged
ftp://rtfm.mit.edu/pub/usenet/news.answers/C-faq/faq
ftp://rtfm.mit.edu/pub/usenet/news.answers/C-faq/abridged
ftp://ftp.uu.net/usenet/news.answers/C-faq/faq.Z
ftp://ftp.uu.net/usenet/news.answers/C-faq/abridged.Z
.)
There are a number of other archive sites scattered around the
world; if you know how to use an "archie" archive server it will
list these sites for you if you query it with the command
"find C-faq".
If you are not able to use ftp (the Internet file transfer
protocol), there are ftp-to-mail servers running at several
sites, and an FAQ list mailserver running at rtfm.mit.edu.
Hypertext versions of the comp.lang.c FAQ list are also available
through the world-wide web (WWW); URL's are
http://www.lysator.liu.se/c/c-faq/index.html

http://www.hut.fi/~jkorpela/CFAQ.html
http://www.hut.fi/~jkorpela/c-faq/index.html
This article (the one you're now reading) is posted twice per
month to comp.std.c, in an effort to head off some of those basic
C programming questions which are occasionally posted here.
Please let me know if you have suggestions about the wording of
this message.
